We frequently work with new exporters and importers taking them through the process of how to export to the USA for the first time. It is important to prepare the products and the documentation prior to shipment to ensure that the first import shipments to the US go through US Customs smoothly without delay and avoiding expensive fines or fees.
First-time importers must verify that the product’s labeling is in English and that the country of origin is clearly marked in the packaging. Additional requirements vary from product to product, therefore it is important to determine the individual labeling and other product requirements that apply specifically to the products that you will be importing.
All documentation for the shipment must be in English, however, invoices can be in other currencies other than the US Dollar.
Overall, import shipments coming into the US require the following documents, other documentation may be required by US Customs or other government agencies according to the product being imported:
- Airway Bill for air shipments
- Bill of Lading for ocean shipments
- Proforma invoice or commercial invoice for shipments valued less than $2,500
- Commercial invoice for shipments valued over $2,500
- Packing list for shipments valued over $2,500
- Power of attorney
- For ocean shipments, we must issue the ISF at least 24 hours prior to shipment
It is important to note that the import process in the USA revolves around the importer. As the exporter, you can prepare your product for shipment to the US by complying with the local government regulations, the importer that has to sign the power of attorney and initiate the import documentation.
